Advocacy Services for Older People
Colchester Mind provides an Independent Mental Health Advocacy service to clients who are detained (on section) at The Kingswood Centre.
The advocate(s) endeavour to engage with and become familiar to the clients on site by visiting on a regular basis. This gives clients the opportunity to gain familiarity with the advocate(s). During this time our service endeavours to get to know the clients concerned, and to formulate ways to set up effective contact and understanding, in light of any communication difficulties. Our service provides support and information regarding anything concerning their rights, including:
- Mental Health Act Rights
- Care Planning Meetings
- Present and Future Care
- Medication
- Housing and Accommodation
- Day Care Services and Occupation
- Complaints
- Financial Difficulties
- Contacting Solicitors
- Assistance with forms and letters
- Help to contact family and friends
- Any other issues concerning rights
Non-instructed Advocacy
Where a service user cannot give clear instruction, the advocate will take time to get to know the service user and build a picture of their preferences and lifestyle including their cultural background.
The advocate will seek appropriate alternative forms of communication which could enable the service user to express views and choices.
The advocate will ensure the persons fundamental human rights are respected and upheld at all times.
The advocate will Challenge service providers and decision makers in order to promote a person-centred approach.
The advocate will act as a 'witness' or observer in the settings in which the service user spends time.
